Sample of course
The status of single in the default position for filing. If you are not married on the last day of the tax year and do not have qualifying dependents, this is the status you must claim. Not married includes a finalized divorce or legal separation by the last day of the tax year. Even though this is the default filing position, it is not the worst filing status there is to be claimed. We will discuss this further in the section on Married Filing Separate.
